You’ll see many foreigners in Nepal, including women, travelling alone and comparing with India and Pakistan travel, some travel sites even consider Nepal to be safe for traveling alone – even for women. Just visit the lonelyplanet’s Travel Forum page on Travelling Nepal Alone – we certainly feel happy that so many friends around the world feel at home in our country.
But we suggest all tourists to accompany at least one fellow traveler, especially if you’re celebrating long holidays in the far flung remote areas.
Even if you may feel secure and at home in many of the places, you should also know that many of the lone travelers were lost in the Himalayas because they were alone. Sometimes, travelers venture on their excitement to discover new trails only to be lost in the wilderness without any food. The environment in the high Himalayas are unfavorable for humans due perennial snowfalls, so require constant supply of food or warmth difficult for a traveler to manage alone.
The WHO reports that most of the health, safety & security problems for the travelers arise not from any “exotic diseases” but from accidents & injuries. Some cases of theft & harassments have also been reported. Therefore, we suggest all travelers to accompany an authorized local guide, and ask for an advice without any hesitation.
Still, if you’re travelling alone, we would advise you be specially careful about:
- Your health & fitness level
- Political, bureaucratic, & other procedures like travel permits, passport, visa including hassles & crimes
- Climate, Season, & Weather in your travel area
- Social, religious, & Cultural sensitivity & customs
