Popular Divinities
Most of the Nepalese worship the Nepalese Vedic Gods. Among the various Gods, Vishnu is the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer. The ‘Shiva Linga’ or phallic symbol of god Shiva, which represent a supreme power, can be found in any temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Female goddess are also esteemed and feared in this Himalayan Kingdom. Female goddess Mahadevi, Mahakali, Bhagawati, Iswori are some of the names given to Shiva Shakti.

Most of the Nepalese temples are regarded as ‘Shakti Peth’ or power points. The virgin goddess represents ‘Shakti’ or power/prime force.  Similarly, another god, Brahma, is the creator. Other popular divinities include Indra, Kumari, Mahakaala, Rato-Machhindra Nath, Bhimsen.

Different deities are also worshipped for different reasons, such as Ganesh for luck and Saraswati for knowledge, Laxmi for wealth, Hanuman for protection. Another god, Krishna, is believed to be the human incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Bhagawat Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata are the Hindu holy scripts.

Buddha is widely worshipped by the Buddhists and also by the Hindus and other religious groups of Nepal. The five Dhyani Buddhas Vairochana, Akshobhaya, Rathasambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi represent the five basic elements earth, fire, water, air and ether.
