Local transport in Nepal is hugely dominated by the road networks, the country mostly being a landlocked mountainous terrain. Even the roads reach only major market towns across the country. Most of Nepal is accessible only by adopting primitive means of travel – that’s one of the reasons why the country is so famous for trekking.
Local Transport in Kathmandu & Pokhara
Both Kathmandu & Pokhara have similar transport mechanism. There are city bus & microbus services run by private bus entrepreneurs. Cab or taxis are available in both cities, and the tourists mostly use the cab services. The tour agents are allowed to run their own services separately. Rental cars, bikes, & mountain-bikes are also on hire in these two cities..
Transportation within Nepal
Planes Planes are excellent mode of transport to reach remote parts of a mountainous country. The government airliner Nepal Airlines operates air services to the interior parts of the country.
Helicopters Helicopter services are getting popular in Nepal. The helicopters can go to every remote corners of Nepal – providing a pleasurable and exciting journey.
Local Bus The cheapest mode of transportation in Nepal is the bus service that covers most parts of Nepal. The local buses of Nepal are too crowded. They can be crowded both with people and domestic animals like goats, ducks etc. Tourist Bus Tourist buses are relatively comfortable than local bus and micro. However, tourist buses take a wide road area hence run only on wide inter cities roads and to the tourist areas like Chitwan, Pokhara etc.
Rickshaw Rickshaws are good for short outing. It provides a clear scene of the market.
Tempo There are two types of tempos in Nepal - a three-wheeled electric or propane-powered microbus which have seat for 10-13 passengers
Taxis Taxis are available in Kathmandu & Pokhara. You can also hire a taxi for long route, short route, day basis etc.
Motorcycle Motorcycles are available on rent for traveling in Nepal You can rent mobikes in Kathmandu’s Thamel area and in Pokhara.
