Changunarayan
 

The temple of Changu Narayan situated at an altitude of 5000 feets on the hillock of Dolagiri to the north of Bhaktapur is one of the oldest temples in Nepal. This temple has its distinct historical and architectural significance. The most authentic and oldest ever inscription is located in the precinct of Changu Narayan.

Although less visited shrine by the locals, a whole day is needed to study and enjoy Changu Narayan, just 15 kilometers from Kathmandu city. Those interested in history and ancient stone images should not miss studying the Changu Narayan stone & metal artifacts. The nearby Manohara River, and the sights many Himalayan peaks to the north also make Changu Narayan hill a good viewpoint very near to Kathmandu.

The oldest inscription dated 464 AD is a credited to have been set up by Lichchshavi King Manadeva. The erection of Garuda Piller by Manadeva is expression of his devotion and reverence to Chang Narayan as learnt from the inscription, points that the temple of Changu Narayan was built sometime before 464 AD.

The Vishwaroop sculpture represents Vishnu in his most universal form which dates back to 8th century A.D. The stone image of Vishnu Vikranta  dates back to the 8th century A.D.  It is one of the most powerful form of Vishnu. This is when he measured space with his feet to blackmail the virtuous demon King Bali Raja.

 Another image of Vishnu riding Garuda (the mythical bird) dates back to the 10th century A.D.The image of Nar-Singha Vishnu Avatar of Vishnu is seen in his half man and half lion form.
